11th October 2022 International Day of The Girl
10th October 2022 marked the 10th anniversary of the International Day of the Girl (IDG). Looking back at 10 years of advocacy in an effort to raise awareness about various topics that concern girls in decision making and creating a world where they are safe and free to be who they choose to be, we can say that some doors are being opened and changes however slow are being made at various levels to see complete results.
With obvious adversities such as the Covid-19 pandemic, gender-equality resistant persons and laws, we can easily draw back to and dwell on the problems that girls all over the world are facing but, in commemoration of the International Day of the Girl (IDG) 2022, we chose to focus on the positive impacts that our girls in the rural areas are making for themselves and their families. We chose to share the testimonies of girls who with the right support and opportunities have made informed decisions and have become independent, educated and breadwinners.
When given the right support and being exposed to beneficial opportunities, girls are able to transform and achieve their goals. Our girls on the Strategic Approaches to Girls’ Education Project (STAGE) in partnership with UKAID and World Education Ghana have proven this theory to be true. After a series of basic literacy, numeracy and vocational skills training in hairdressing, baking, beads making through various dialects of the communities, they have been awarded with a certificate from the National Vocational Training Institute in Ghana, and seed capital to begin their businesses and take charge of their finances and families. For many of the graduates of the 3rd cohort, it was a life changing opportunity that has enabled them to become independent and walk a different path in life. For others, it represented the chance to show their abilities as girls and gain the respect that they deserve. For single mothers, it was the right opportunity to show that they are capable of raising their children and give them the future they deserve even without a present father.

On the occasion of the International Day Of The Girl, we celebrated their tenacity, their consistency and devotion. We celebrated their courage to work for a better living condition and aspire for a brighter future. We believe in the power of dedication and wish our girls a successful journey to success.
